This story involves a very crude old phone recording I made of a piano motif that became the basis for the piece “Kingdom Come”, being caught between two feuding dentists in two countries, a 20k+ km drive through no reception Washington, Oregon, Nevada and California deserts to and fro between incredibly sparse premium gasoline outlets, two pairs of dog maulings, and hearing damage caused by months of 13+ hour mixing days, and maybe too by a sudden blast from a very melodic German DJ at Village Studios Vancouver.
And inspiration hitting of course while parading a wet carnitas burrito in front of a gym window of treadmillers in Pacifica before driving up the bluffs of HWY-1 planning the harmonies. And finally back in Canada after my futile cross-global dental appointments, and successful hearing tests (I can hear super well over my chronic tinnitus), making the one-take recordings of the piano improvisations while yelling in real-time through my downtown high-rise apartment door at the racket in the hallway only to find out a neighbour had passed away, and family were cleaning up the decades of hoarded belongings. Brought them take-out sushi to atone. Not necessarily in that order, and so much more.
