A document of Paper World

This piece is fun to listen to without the animation which was designed by an award winning Hungarian team of filmmakers for a World Wildlife Fund awareness campaign. I chose it firstly because it has no dialogue as I didn't have the time or patience to deal with ADR and actors, even if I have a good ear for dialogue, love people and encourage their best performances in and outside of acting, and secondly because it really, like any good story or song, has good rhythm, a palpable climax and seemless flow.

How Kingdom Come Came About

This story involves a very crude old phone recording I made of a piano motif that became the basis for the piece “Kingdom Come”, being caught between two feuding dentists in two countries, a 20k+ km drive through no reception Washington, Oregon, Nevada and California deserts to and fro between incredibly sparse premium gasoline outlets, two pairs of dog maulings, and hearing damage caused by months of 13+ hour mixing days, and maybe too by a sudden blast from a very melodic German DJ at Village Studios…

40s of jazz

An EP of vocal pieces (not jazz and way longer than 40s)

I was tasked to write about 40s of jazz for a South African documentary and immediately rebelled against my adult self and wrote instead these 3 pieces while camped on a camping bed with my rog laptop and motu track 16 with horrendous latency (all my equipment was packed in storage for an impending cross Canada move), and to my neighbours' horror finished the raw effort by about 3-4am.

I suppose the totally improvised music and lyrical boomy…

Celebrating ninths

R9 |Westron Rose, a symphony about man's inner war expressed in the outer scales of world war with redemption found in our lost femininity; written on the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's ninth symphony

R4LUV

Someone pointed out R4LUV means “Ready for Love”, and I was not at the time because it didn't even cross my mind; I called it R4 because it was my 4th Racket, and LUV because altogether it sounds like a kid saying “All for love”, which is why I'm doing any and all of this. For some reason the song sounds like a spaceship airport.

Mercy for Mercy

I may have to either give a giant side-chained eq haircut to the bass or change up the instruments that sounded so nice solo yet masked in the mix. Was thinking Top Gun bass line carried over a desert of verbed marimbas but turned out a tropical mudslide; and vocals may be added at some point but I have two different sets of lyrics and melodies to decide on. Plus I have a half finished symphony to get to, among other tragedies.

At Spes Infracta | Yet Hope Unbroken

Inspired by another 8min long song by Fourtet and Dan Worrell's sublime wonky pieces, Infracta incorporates my unintentional style of taking contrasting motifs, layering them, then repositioning them relative to each other throughout the song to create subtle but contrasting rhythmic and melodic variations, much like seeing the same thing from many perspectives.

It was a challenge to maintain a high average loudness with a Classical/Jazz standard of dynamic range and acoustic quality. The relentless and long…
