At Spes Infracta | Yet Hope Unbroken

Inspired by another 8min long song by Fourtet and Dan Worrell's sublime wonky pieces, Infracta incorporates my unintentional style of taking contrasting motifs, layering them, then repositioning them relative to each other throughout the song to create subtle but contrasting rhythmic and melodic variations, much like seeing the same thing from many perspectives.

It was a challenge to maintain a high average loudness with a Classical/Jazz standard of dynamic range and acoustic quality. The relentless and long effort reminded me of my aunts' recent struggles with illness, and our family motto “At Spes Infracta, Yet Hope Unbroken”. The original album photos taken by me of the ancestral lands of the BC natives also looks like the source of the reverb of the kick drum, as if I had recorded an indigenous shaman drum in the mist over the ocean inlets.

Dedicated to my family
